The Music I Like

June 12, 2014

Yesterday I listened to: Muddy Waters, Jack White, Building 529, Concert at Calico Flats, and Vivaldi.  It was a typical day.  What kind of music to I like?  Turns out just about anything that sounds good.  I even like some hip hop as long I can’t understand the words.

A few years ago I sat down and wrote down my top ten favorite music list off the top of my head in under five minutes.  Every once in a while I go back and update it.  Here’s my current list updated this morning:

  1. Somewhere Over The Rainbow – Izzy – Youngest daughter’s wedding (tie)
  2. True Companion – Marc Cohn – Oldest daughter’s wedding (tie)
  3. Desolation Row – Bob Dylan – Turned me on to music as a message
  4. 9th Symphony – Beethoven – Turned me on to classical music
  5. Four Seasons – Vivaldi – I just love it – 1st time I heard is was driving State College to Baltimore and it made me forget all the stress, cares, and worries of work and life, mostly work
  6. The Perfect Country and Western Song – David Allen Coe – because it is the perfect county and western song
  7. Sounds of Silence – Simon and Garfunkel – this was the song I had to explain to Gwen when we were taking a class a TCJC and had to write a paper explaining it
  8. A Day in the Life – Beatles – revolutionary song on a revolutionary album (Dr. Pepper). You can’t have a top 10 without the Beatles
  9. Oceans by Hillsong UNITED. The part where she takes off and just makes noise.  Also Oceans by Pearl Jam is darn good.
  10. I’m a Man – Quicksilver Messenger Service – best guitars ever only  Jessica by The Almond Brothers comes close in my opinion. This version of I’m a Man is the best even better than the original by Bo Diddley

Footnote: No Blues in the list even though I currently listen toBlues more than any other genre. Seems strange, right now I can’t imagine removing any of the above from the list.

Why I voted for Romney in 2012

November 7, 2012

I have really struggled over whom to vote for this election.  Therefore, this weekend I decided to do an informal trade study. I first listed the issues most important to me.  The only criteria on the issues was there had to be 7 or less.  My theory was any issue below the 7 could not be important enough to influence my decision.  Then for each issue I listed the candidate most likely to work for a favorable (in my opinion) resolution to the issue:

  1. Environment – Obama
  2. Climate change – Obama
  3. Energy crisis – Obama
  4. Health care – Romney
  5. Economy – Romney
  6. Foreign affairs – too close to call
  7. Change is good (throw the bums out) Romney
  8. Immigration (had to add number 8 because of the tie) – Romney

Romney  wins the trade study and I live in Texas.  Therefore, I cast my vote for Romney. Why Texas you ask?  Because Texas is an uber-red state so my vote did not count anyway.  Therefore, if Obama wins I help push Romney’s popular vote higher and maybe, just maybe he wins the popular vote and loses the election.  Now that would send a real message to the bums in D.C. that we are really fed up!

Climate change – myth or reality

September 16, 2011

The high temperature Tuesday this week in McKinney was 107 which was a record September 13. We also reached 100 degrees 70 days so far this Summer which is another record. The old record was 69 in 1980. Luckily, we don’t live in Wichita Falls just a couple of hours Northwest of us.  They have reach at least 100 degrees 100 days to-date this year.

Furthermore, Texas had the hottest June, July, August of any state ever since they started keeping records.

Oh, how could I forget, Texas had the driest Summer on record this year also.

Don’t let the smoke get in your eyes, but Texas is burning.  Wild fires are everywhere fueled by the dry, hot weather.

From down here in Texas it appears  climate change is a reality! The icecaps are melting, New England is flooding,  and Texas is burning.
